The Food Technology department at Sedgefield Community College recently welcomed chefs from the Royal Navy for an exciting two-day culinary competition that challenged students' skills, creativity and teamwork.

A total of 104 students took part in the in-house competition, working alongside the visiting chefs to prepare and present a range of dishes. The standard of cooking throughout the event was exceptional, with the Royal Navy team describing Sedgefield Community College as the best school they have ever had the opportunity to work with.

Students competed across a number of categories, with successful participants receiving medals in recognition of their achievements. The competition provided an excellent opportunity for students to showcase the practical skills they have developed through their Food Technology studies while gaining valuable feedback from experienced professionals.

Following the practical sessions, all students took part in a question-and-answer session with members of the Royal Navy's catering division. The discussion offered a fascinating insight into careers within the Navy and highlighted a range of post-16 opportunities available to young people, including funded degree and PhD programmes and a starting salary of £28,000.

The session proved particularly valuable in raising aspirations and helping students explore future career pathways, demonstrating the wide range of opportunities available beyond school.

"This was such a welcoming school; the hospitality was second to none. The students worked incredibly hard and showed fantastic motivation in their cooking. We believe, as the Navy, that everyone can achieve something great and be successful."
